Martin Luther King, Jr., (January 15, 1929-April 4, 1968) was born Michael Luther King, Jr., but later had his name changed to Martin. His grandfather began the family's long tenure as pastors of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, serving from 1914 to 1931; his father has served from then until the present, and from 1960 until his death Martin Luther acted as co-pastor. Martin Luther attended segregated public schools in Georgia, graduating from high school at the age of fifteen; he received the B. A. degree in 1948 from Morehouse College, a distinguished Negro institution of Atlanta from which both his father and grandfather had graduated. After three years of theological study at Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania where he was elected president of a predominantly white senior class, he was awarded the B.D. in 1951. With a fellowship won at Crozer, he enrolled in graduate studies at Boston University, completing his residence for the doctorate in 1953 and receiving the degree in 1955. In Boston he met and married Coretta Scott, a young woman of uncommon intellectual and artistic attainments. Two sons and two daughters were born into the family.
In 1954, Martin Luther King became pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. Always a strong worker for civil rights for members of his race, King was, by this time, a member of the executive committee of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the leading organization of its kind in the nation. He was ready, then, early in December, 1955, to accept the leadership of the first great Negro nonviolent demonstration of contemporary times in the United States, the bus boycott described by Gunnar Jahn in his presentation speech in honor of the laureate. The boycott lasted 382 days. On December 21, 1956, after the Supreme Court of the United States had declared unconstitutional the laws requiring segregation on buses, Negroes and whites rode the buses as equals. During these days of boycott, King was arrested, his home was bombed, he was subjected to personal abuse, but at the same time he emerged as a Negro leader of the first rank.
In 1957 he was elected president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, an organization formed to provide new leadership for the now burgeoning civil rights movement. The ideals for this organization he took from Christianity; its operational techniques from Gandhi. In the eleven-year period between 1957 and 1968, King traveled over six million miles and spoke over twenty-five hundred times, appearing wherever there was injustice, protest, and action; and meanwhile he wrote five books as well as numerous articles. In these years, he led a massive protest in Birmingham, Alabama, that caught the attention of the entire world, providing what he called a coalition of conscience. and inspiring his "Letter from a Birmingham Jail", a manifesto of the Negro revolution; he planned the drives in Alabama for the registration of Negroes as voters; he directed the peaceful march on Washington, D.C., of 250,000 people to whom he delivered his address, "l Have a Dream", he conferred with President John F. Kennedy and campaigned for President Lyndon B. Johnson; he was arrested upwards of twenty times and assaulted at least four times; he was awarded five honorary degrees; was named Man of the Year by Time magazine in 1963; and became not only the symbolic leader of American blacks but also a world figure.
At the age of thirty-five, Martin Luther King, Jr., was the youngest man to have received the Nobel Peace Prize. When notified of his selection, he announced that he would turn over the prize money of $54,123 to the furtherance of the civil rights movement.
On the evening of April 4, 1968, while standing on the balcony of his motel room in Memphis, Tennessee, where he was to lead a protest march in sympathy with striking garbage workers of that city, he was assassinated.

A Message from Steel Pulse
2010-01-16 10:43:57
To the people of Haiti
The Steel Pulse family would like to send our condolences to all the families who have lost loved ones in the recent earthquake that have hit the island.
We are endeavouring to help in any way we can, and details will be up on the site soon.
We are presently in Jamaica where we are recording a new album and also preparing to perform on the Rebel Salute concert today.
The island of Haiti has felt the wrath of nature several times in recent years but none as devastating as this latest tragedy.
We were due to perform in Haiti in 2009 but unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances we had to postpone our visit till another time. Rest assured we will be keeping up with your struggle and making every effort to assist in the relief drive.
Our thoughts, prayers and hearts are with you all at this most tragic of times.
Peace, Love and
Guidance from the Steel Pulse Family.

Tour Blog from Selwyn!
2009-12-14 16:01:41
Greetings once again all Pulse fans, hope you're all well and in the best of health and spirits.
Left off last blog when we were in Mexico preparing to fly here to Brazil.
We arrived in Porto Allegre on Tuesday, stopping off first in Sao Paulo where we linked up with Rich, Fred and Henrique at the airport - our promoters for the Brazil run. On arrival in Porto Allegre we dropped our bags at the hotel then several of us took a short walk to the nearest mall to search out some food. We found a couple places, most of us ended up at the pizza/pasta place where we chowed down. Afterwards a few of us checked the supermarket, picked up a few groceries and SIM cards then walked back to the hotel. We all pretty much just chilled for the rest of the evening.
During the night we went through a series of power cuts while outside it seemed like a mini storm was brewing, accompanied with strong winds, lightning and driving rain. I woke early the next day and linked with Sid and Keysha to walk to the mall again where we chowed down again then headed back to our hotel, just in time to catch the rest of the band who were all leaving out for sound check.
At sound check we went through several songs, including "Leggo Beast” which we haven't played for maybe a good 20 years or so. In the evening we were driven to the venue to perform our show. We were given a fantastic reception by the Porto Allegre crowd, many thanks to all the fans for that we really enjoyed it.
After the show we chilled out with the fans for a while before being driven back to the hotel where we rested up for the night, in preparation for the following night's gig. Next day - as the citywide power cut continued - a few of us (Myself, Sidney, Keysha, David, Baruch, Rich and Henrique ) were driven to an Indian Vegan restaurant where the owner - Icanata - treated us to a meal on the house. Many thanks to Icanata and all his staff for an amazing meal and for the great hospitality shown to us. Afterwards Icanata displayed his prowess on some of the various eastern instruments he has at the restaurant entrance hall.
We were than driven back to the hotel by which time the power cut had finished. Soon afterwards David, Sid and me were driven to a local TV station where we were interviewed live as a promotion for tonight's show. Also present at the TV studio were a great blues trio who performed live. Afterwards it was time to head for sound check where we joined up with the rest of the band. On completion of the sound check we went back to the hotel and rested up in preparation for the show.
We left the hotel late in the evening to drive to the venue where we hit the stage after midnight. We were given a rousing reception by the Porto Allegre fans, who we'd like to thank for their great response. We met up with several fans after the show and took photos, signed autographs, and rapped for a while before heading back to the hotel for the night. Got back to the hotel late and started packing as we had an early check out planned.
We all left the hotel at around 8am (no sleep!!) and were driven to the airport where we had a 10.30am flight booked. Time was tight so we had to get checked in fast then head to the gate for our flights. We landed in Rio airport at around 1.30pm and - after meeting out transport/local hosts - were driven to our hotel where the tech crew only had time to drop their luggage before heading straight to the venue to set up the gear ready for sound check (lucky band!!). Amlak taught me some more Portuguese while I waited for my room key. Shortly after dropping my luggage in my room I walked with Henrique to a local store where I picked up a few cd cases which I'd been needing.
Back at the hotel our transport arrived to take us to sound check. We greeted the opening band who was setting up side stage. Also present at the venue was a good friend of ours from B'ham Kokumo who was in Rio working with local youths on an arts program. Great to see him and he filled us in on the work he'd been involved in for the past few weeks. We ran through a few songs and fine-tuned some ideas we'd been working on. Afterwards we drove back to the hotel where we rested up for the evening.
Later, I walked with David, Henrique, and Stone to a local restaurant where we enjoyed a great buffet meal before walking back to the hotel. We all left the hotel after midnight to drive back to the venue where we were due onstage at approx 2am. Thanks to the Rio faithful for waiting up so late for us, you're all true troopers!! After a short delay we got together for our pre-show prayer then hit the stage to jam with the fans.
The Rio crowd didn't disappoint as they sang, danced, and hollered from the first to last song. We also performed “Leggo Beast" for the first time in years and the fans sang every word. Was also great to see the response to lesser known song such as "Go Barack". Afterwards we greeted many fans backstage but couldn't stay for long as we had another early getaway planned from the hotel. Once again we checked out at 8am and headed for Rio airport where we caught a flight at 10.45am bound for Salvador.
We landed safely in Salvador at around midday and were met by the local promoters. We were driven straight to our hotel where we grabbed some sleep. Later in the day some of us had dinner in the hotel restaurant before being picked up to drive to the venue for sound check. There were several fans waiting outside the venue to greet us as we pulled up, thanks for all your support, we're truly indebted to you. We worked on a few songs in sound check before being driven back to the hotel. We left the hotel after midnight again to head back to the venue for a 2am show start. The Salvador crowd was brilliant, another audience who sing the songs from start to finish. Soon as they hear the intros that's it....party time!! I'm sure we shook hands with practically everyone there after the show. Didn't get a chance to greet anyone backstage as we had to head back to the hotel for around half an hour before driving to the airport for a 7am flight to Brasilia. We caught our flight (which I can't remember much about as I dropped asleep) and landed safely in Brasilia at 10am.
We were greeted by several fans at the airport then, after loading up our luggage and equipment, we were driven to our hotel. After checking into our rooms most of us were driven to a local mall to eat. Found some great food at the food court then headed back to the hotel to rest up till sound check time. We were picked up mid afternoon to drive to sound check. On arrival we practiced "Back To My Roots" which we haven't performed in a while. Special bigups to Henrique and Fred for all your great work on our Brazil tour. We were told that "Back To My Roots" was Henrique's favorite Pulse song and decided to perform it tonight as a thank you to him for all his efforts on our behalf. After sound check we headed back to our hotel where we rested up till show time.
Later on that night we were picked up from the hotel to drive back to the venue. We hit the stage at around midnight and were treated to a great reception by our Brasilia fans. "Back To My Roots" and "Leggo Beast" were well received along with the rest of the songs we performed tonight. Thanks to all the fans for coming out and supporting us and special thanks to our production crew (Rich, Derrick, Dave Jacobs, Stone and Baruch) for a great job on the tour, and Rande back in California letting everyone know about dates and times right here on the website. Bigups too to all the band members for your sterling efforts as always. Not forgetting Henrique and Fred, much thanks again for all your hard work.
After the show we mixed and mingled backstage with fans, opening band members and local media. Did a couple interviews then it was time to head back to our hotel again. Next day we all checked out at 2pm and were driven to the airport to start our journeys to our various destinations. First trip for us all was a flight to Sao Paulo where we said our byes and thanks to Henrique, Fred and Rich. Next flight was to Mexico City. We landed there at around 5am the next morning (Tuesday 24th). Me, David and Baruch had a 16 hour wait as we had a 9pm flight. Sid, Donovan and Stone had a 12 hour layover and Derrick, Juris and Dave flew out at around 10am.
Our next live performance will be in Jamaica at Rebel Salute in January and after that we plan to head for Australia and New Zealand.
Nuff Love and best wishes to all our fans over the coming holiday period. Hope you've all enjoyed good health and multiple blessings in 2009 and may it continue throughout 2010 and beyond.
Peace, Love and many thanks

Earth Crisis and True Democracy Reissued & Remastered 12-inch Vinyl LP In Our Web Store NOW!
2009-11-20 02:13:25
For the first time in many years the ground breaking Earth Crisis and True Democracy are once again available on 12” vinyl LP!
1984's EARTH CRISIS, produced by the legendary Jimmy Haynes, garnered the group a gold record with its well-balanced mix of politically charged lyrics and happy-go-lucky beats. The vinyl edition features a remastered version of the socially powerful “Earth Crisis” as well standout tracks like moody roots driven “Steppin' Out,” “Roller Skates,” a surprisingly upbeat tale of woe, and the richly textured “Tight Rope.”
Mixing impassioned social commentary with stellar Rasta beats, these sons of Jamaican immigrants rose from humble Birmingham origins to become one of the U.K.'s all-time greatest reggae acts. Their 1982 Elektra debut, True Democracy, was produced by Karl Pitterson (of Peter Tosh's Legalize) and features the tracks "Ravers" and "Worth His Weight In Gold (Rally Round)." This expanded edition includes four previously unreleased bonus tracks!

New Blog from Selwyn!
2009-11-17 00:18:52
Greetings to all Pulse fans worldwide and thanks as always for your continued support!
We're in Mexico at the moment where we performed last night at the JahFest festival here in Mexico City.
I left the UK on Friday with Amlak, David and Baruch to fly via Frankfurt to Mexico City. After a 13 hour trek form Frankfurt we landed safely in Mexico and were met at the airport by Haydy, representing the promoters. We were driven to our hotel where we met up with Sidney, Juris, C sharp, Derrick, Dave Jacobs, Donovan, Keysha, Stone, and George Michaelow (Friend and tour manager).
We had dinner at the nearby restaurant and rested up for the night.
Next morning the tech crew went to the venue from 8am to set up and check our gear. At breakfast we met Frenchy - great guitarist, Kev B and Lester Sterling from Skatalites band (who'd performed the night before) and few other folks involved with the festival. After breakfast Sid, Donovan, C sharp, and I went over to the venue to check the equipment. Due to the tight schedule the gear had to be pulled down so we headed back to the hotel for the day till show time.
After making a few calls and net links me and Sid walked to the nearby mall to pick up a few things. We met up with a few Pulse fans on the way and took photos. One couple we met in the mall told us they'd travelled from Guadalajara just to see us. Plus they had to travel back after the show as the hotels were so expensive.
We found a nice restaurant in the mall where we had a meal, met some nice families there. After that we walked back to the hotel, fairly slowly due to the high altitude. Back at the hotel we caught up with emails/calls etc and I rehearsed backing vocals with Juris and Keysha in the evening.
We left the hotel around 10pm to head to the venue where we performed to a passionate audience for an hour 45mins. Thanks to the fans in Mexico for a great evening! I know you'd been waiting in the chill night for our show and you gave us a fantastic reception. It's been a couple years since we played here last and we really enjoyed our return visit and hope to be back soon!
After the show we met up with many fans backstage where we took photos, signed autographs, and rapped/reasoned for a while. We headed back to the hotel to rest up for the night.
Next morning after breakfast we said our byes to George Michaelow who had to head back to DC.
As I write this we're getting ready to fly to Brazil for our next leg where we'll be performing 5 shows.
‘Nuff love to you all and I'll be back in touch again real soon.

About 40 people gathered at the edge of a bike path in Lafayette on Saturday afternoon to officially rename the adjacent park in honor of John Breaux, a well-known local who was killed in January.
Breaux was a familiar face in eastern Boulder County, often seen picking up trash along area roads and always seen smiling. He died alongside U.S. 287 -- just a few hundred yards from the park that now bears his name -- when he was struck by a car while riding his bike.
"He set an example that all of us should strive for, but probably most of us will never reach," Lafayette Mayor Chris Cameron said before unveiling a new plaque by the bike path that runs between U.S. 287 and what was called Barberry Park, just south of Kimark Street.
"Today we give John Breaux a place of his own," she said. "A place of beauty in this park."
The new plaque shows a now-iconic picture of Breaux smiling and waving from his bike, which is laden with balloons and bags of trash he's just collected. The inscription reads, "May all who encounter John's legacy aspire to his level of service and humanity."
"If he was alive now, he'd be here every day, making sure this park was clean," Breaux's brother, David Bright, said as he looked out over the grassy lawn to the park's playground. "It would be the cleanest park in Colorado."
Bright's neighbor, Rick Weingarten, agreed.
"He would have loved it here," said Weingarten, who performed a song he wrote for Breaux at the dedication. "He would have thought this is a great thing."
Since Breaux's death, the communities of Lafayette and Louisville have come together to honor a man that seemed to have touched everyone, including the organization of an annual spring cleanup day and a memorial statue, also fashioned after the picture of Breaux on a bike with balloons.

CA Tour Blog From Selwyn!
2009-09-22 02:19:49
Greetings and much love to all our fans out there and bigups, love , and props to all our tech, admin and musical crew for all your great work on the road in 2009! We couldn't have done it without you!
We started the concluding leg of our short California tour with myself, Amlak, and David all flying from London to San Francisco on Tuesday the 15th of September, where we met up with Rich, Sidney, Donovan, Keysha, Juris, Dave Jacobs, Derrick, Stone, and C Sharp. We met our new bus driver Joe and he drove us to a nearby plaza where we all grabbed some food for the 7 hour journey to Arcata, CA. After everyone had their food we drove back to the airport to pick up Baruch who's flight had been delayed, afterwards it was time to head for Arcata. We arrived at our hotel after midnight and rested up for the night.
Next day - 10.30am - our tech crew drove over to the venue - the John Van Duzer Theater - to begin setting up for the night’s show. Our merchandise manager and webmaster Rande made it to Arcata just after noontime after flying up from Los Angeles. Special thanks to Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo and all the wonderful people in Eureka, CA at the Arkley Center for Performing Arts. Pat’s truck was kind enough to bring up and then the Arkley was kind enough to hang on to some of our merchandise and guitars for a few days before we arrived in the US.
The band headed to the venue at 2 pm for sound check. We spent a few hours rehearsing most of the songs for the set then settled down to eat some food courtesy of our promoters Humboldt State Univ. After our meal we were driven back to the hotel by the concert runner where we rested up till lobby call. We left the hotel at 7pm to go back for tonight's show. We hit the stage at just a little after 8 pm and got a great reception from the Arcata fans, thanks to you all for a great night. We met up with a few old friends after the show then drove back to the hotel as we had an early departure coming up.
We started out from the hotel at 4:30 am to drive to Santa Cruz where we were due to play at the Catalyst. The drive took approx 7 hours and we arrived at our hotel a little after midday. Our tech crew was driven straight to the Catalyst to set up while we lucky band members and webmaster stayed at the hotel till sound check lobby call. I (and a few others) grabbed a Thai meal across the road from the hotel and met up with everyone at 4pm to leave for sound check. We rehearsed for a couple hours then a few of us returned to the hotel and rest of us stayed on the bus till show time. We went onstage at 9.30pm after being introduced by our old friend Rocky Bailey. The Catalyst crowd always rocks and tonight was no exception. Also everyone always loses a few pounds here too, sweating soon as we hit the stage!! A packed house made some serious noise tonight, thanks to you all for your support and love. After our encore we boarded the bus to get changed then met up with friends, fans, family while the tech crew packed down the gear. After a couple hours we drove back to our hotel to prepare for our trip to Santa Barbara.
We left the hotel at 5am to begin the 5/6 hour drive. We arrived at West Beach festival site at approx midday where we stayed while the crew setup for an early sound check. Nice venue today, outdoors right on the waterfront. We sound checked then we were driven to our hotel to chill before the show. The bus stayed at the venue as that was our tech crew's home for the day. We left the hotel at 7pm, picked up by our festival driver and were taken back to the venue. We got changed, got together for our pre-show prayer and hit the stage at 8.15pm. Brilliant audience tonight, stretched back a good distance and in great voice!! Also great sound too, felt great onstage, well done again to our tech crew for a job well done. Thanks to all the Santa Barbara fans for your great vibes, we enjoyed ourselves. Afterwards we greeted friends and fans and bid a goodbye to Rande before heading to the hotel briefly. At 2am it was time to move again as we started our drive to Napa where we'll be performing at a private function.
Many, many thanks to all our fans once again for coming out to support us at the shows. We love you all and look forward to jamming with you again in the not too distant future.
Blessed Love and see you all soon.
Peace and Love

August 29th, 2009
Got back earlier from last night's concert at the Belly Up in Aspen, CO. We had a great evening, brilliant audience, & nuff energy. Thanks to all you fans for making it a memorable night.
We hit the stage at 9.15pm and started with Rally Round then Roller Skates, No More Weapons, continuing through our mixture of older songs and more recent music.
Was a fun show and I heard it sold out too!
After the show we had to drive the 200 miles back to Denver where we're staying to prepare for tonight's show at Red Rocks!
Big ups to Sid, Rich and Stone for the driving once again. Also, nuff props to our production crew once again for a great job! I will continue the blogging later after tonight's show.
Blessings and love to you all and hope you all have a pleasant day and weekend.

Greetings once again to all you Pulsers!
We left our hotel in Denver at approx 7.15pm to drive to Red Rocks and got there approx 7.45pm, while Scratch Perry was on stage backed up by our good friends Lionize who are doing a US tour with him. Israel Vibration also performed earlier but we missed their set, but heard they had a nice show.
Met up with Errol Moore and Horace, guitarist and Keyboards for Israel Vibration. Had dinner, courtesy of Red Rocks, and then went to listen to Scratch as well as check out my keyboard rig. After Scratch performed got chance to say Hi to the Lionize crew before we got ready for our set.
We got ready, said our traditional prayer and hit the stage at 9.45pm. Another massive crowd tonight! Red Rocks never disappoints! Thanks again to all the fans who came out, we had a blast up there and looks like you did too!
After the show we hung out with fans and friends backstage and said our goodbyes to Lionize who had a long drive ahead for their next show. It was back to the hotel afterwards where we'd prepare to all fly out next morning.
Next up will be California again September 16th-18th. The whole crew will meet up again for the first of 3 shows at Humboldt, then Santa Cruz, and Santa Barbara.
Until then, take care and thanks again for all your love and support.
Peace and Love

I flew out of London with Amlak on Friday the 21st of August via Chicago to get to San Diego. Due to a delay on our flight we missed our connection and thus had a 4 hour wait in Chicago for the next flight.
We spoke to Sid and Rich while we were there. Sid was on a plane sitting on NY LaGuardia airport runway, he'd been there for hours with Stone and Donovan due to bad weather. Thankfully everyone arrived safe in San Diego and we all rested up for the night. Thanks to Sid, Derrick, and Donovan for driving the minibuses, much appreciated.
Next day, Saturday, was show day and we all left the hotel at 11am for sound check at Del Mar racetrack. Today was hot!! We rehearsed for a couple hours then had dinner on site. After dinner we were driven back to the hotel to rest up till show time. When I was onstage I could see people stretching for miles!! Just like to say thanks to all you people who came out to fill out the park and jam to the Pulse.
After the Del Mar show we went back to the hotel to rest up for the night. Next morning we started out at 11am to drive to Anaheim. The drive took approx 2 hours and the crew left from the hotel at 2pm to set up the equipment at House of Blues. The band left at 5pm for sound check and took all our stage gear etc as we'd be staying at House of Blues for the rest of the day. We sound checked for a little while then had dinner - courtesy of House of Blues - and chilled after till show time. We went on stage 9.15pm to a great reception from the Anaheim fans, thanks again to you all for your brilliant support.
After the show we met up with a few fans and friends then headed back to the hotel for the night. Next morning we all went to the airport to fly to our different destinations for 4 days till our next stop in Colorado. On Thursday I linked up with everyone in Denver airport and we drove via minibuses to our hotel in the town. Thanks again to Sid, Donovan and Rich for driving the minibuses. Got to the hotel late evening then went to go find some food. I found a nice Mexican place near the hotel. After dinner we all chilled for the night.
Next morning the crew left out early for the 200 mile to Aspen for the next show. The band left at 12.30pm in 2 minibuses and it took us approx 3 hours to cover the trip. Colorado has some beautiful scenery which we were privileged to observe as we were driving up those long, winding roads!! On arriving it was straight to work as our crew had everything ready for us and there was a band opening up for us also.
We worked on a few things, including "As Tears Go By" the Rolling Stones cover. I'm writing this as we're getting ready to go on stage. I'll give you the update on how the show went in a few hours.
Till then thanks again for all your love and support and Blessed Love to everyone. Also big ups to all band members and production crew, Love y'all!
Peace and Love
Selwyn D

A Special Appreciation To Steel Pulse & Company!
2009-07-23 18:29:12
On behalf of this year's beneficiary organization, recipient of funds from the Steel Pulse U.S. tour, I want to express our sincerest appreciation for your continuous support to New Orleans, during the four years since hurricane Katrina.
The $1,550.00 you raised this year has allowed us the opportunity to put up a temporary roof covering on a 170 year old historic black church, that was voluntarily built by slaves way back in 1838. Because of severe damage, the church has not been functional since Katrina.
Each time, it rained, stormed, or during hurricane season, the damaged roof allowed water to seep into the interior, further exacerbating the problems.
Your fan's contributions will for the time being, put an end to this particular obstacle.
It is the very "First" step in our efforts to save and restore this very viable institution & beacon of inspiration to this community, and to facilitate the aspirations of future generations.
Your endeavors to assist us here in New Orleans is indeed invaluable and a testament to your organization's benevolent commitment to truth, to peace, and to justice being served in the most neglected & disenfranchised areas of the city.
Yours Truly, In Solidarity,

2009-07-19 13:34:08
Peace, Love and continued thanks to all our family, friends and fans.
Please join us in wishing strength, endurance and Jah's blessings to Amlak Tafari and family.
Since the turn of the year Amlak has lost his Stepfather, 2 uncles and a cousin. His Stepfather and one of his uncles were living in the UK and his cousin and second uncle lived in Jamaica. All lost their battles with mid to long term illnesses and will be dearly missed by all family and friends.
It goes without saying that Amlak and his family have had a most difficult 2009 and our thoughts and prayers will always be with you in all our hearts and minds.
Stay strong, much love and Jah Bless.
Peace and Love from Selwyn, David and the entire Steel Pulse family
This news was updated as previous it was posted that Amlak's Father had passed. Good news is that his Father is healthy, happy, and well!
Thanks to Amlak who spoke to the website today to so we could fix this mistake.

Michael Jackson 1958 – 2009
2009-07-12 20:17:13
After the tragic and sudden loss of the King of Pop Michael Jackson we'd like to thank Michael for the immense legacy of musical innovation, ground- breaking videography and classic songs and performances that will remain with us as a memento to his genius.
His music and emergence on our cultural and social landscape has helped to enrich our lives and is etched in our memories, alongside Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, Jim Morrison, Bob Marley, James Brown, Elvis Presley, Sammy Davis Jr., Duke Ellington, Nat King Cole, Glen Miller, Rick Nelson, Sid Vicious, Janis Joplin, Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly, Randy Rhodes, Tupac Shakur, Robert Johnson, Brian Jones, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Aaliyah, John Denver, Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines, Jim Croce, Eric “Easy E” Wright, Jaco Pastorius, Keith Moon, Darrell "Dimebag Darrell" Abbott, Freddie Mercury, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Johnny Cash, Kurt Cobain and a host of other great 20th century artists who are no longer with us.
However their music and images and stories continue to give us all immense joy.
R.I.P Michael and thanks for the memories.

New Tour Blog From Selwyn!
2009-07-02 14:31:34
Greetings to all Pulse fans as always and many thanks for the continued love and support.
We recently performed at the Island Records 50th anniversary festival in London. Our day (26th May) began in Birmingham where myself, Millie, Amlak, Baruch, Ron Thompson (engineer), Donna and partner Dave were all picked up from our homes for the 120 mile drive to London. By 10am we were on the motorway and arrived early afternoon at our hotel, just round the corner from the venue in Shepherds Bush. We met up with Sidney, C sharp, Keysha, Juris and Donovan then made the short journey to our rehearsal base where we met up with Dave Jacobs (monitor engineer), Rob Greenland (guitar tech) and Andy Corrigan (tour manager).
After our greetings we proceeded to check out our new gear which we'd be using on stage the following night. David was due in later so we began working on some of the songs, including Soundcheck, Prodigal Son, Soldiers medley, Roller Skates amongst others. We were joined by founding member Michael Riley who we had asked to add some harmonica on Soundcheck. Was great jamming with him again after so long and brought back some great memories.
It was a hot sunny day outside, in fitting with the great vibes being mustered up in rehearsals. At around 5pm David arrived and we continued rehearsing till midnight by which time we were all tired and hungry. Due to the long rehearsals we missed out on the first night of the Island fest which featured Sly and Robbie, Grace Jones, Aswad, I Threes in the lineup. We all headed for a Jamaican take away place round the corner which served up some great food. Me and Millie were walking back to the hotel when I heard a voice shout "Selwyn!!" When I span round I was greeted by non other than old friend and producer/engineer Godwin Logie who I haven't seen in person for many years. Was great seeing Godwin, we exchanged details and promised to stay in touch. He was just going home after the first night of the festival, which he said turned out to be a great evening of entertainment. Godwin had worked on several of our early albums and was also the mastermind behind Gregory Isaacs "Night Nurse" album. Back at the hotel I met up with several people in the lobby, including Sly Dunbar, Bubbler Waul, engineer/producer fattist and Mikey Chung.
After a good night's rest I woke next morning and headed down for breakfast where I met legendary drummer Desi Roots who was working with Ernest Ranglin on the Island Fest. Also saw Bubbler again and we had a good chat about old times and recent projects/tours etc. Bubbler was here working with Sly and Robbie. Later in the day, around 3pm we all walked the short distance to the Shepherds Bush Empire for soundcheck. Bubbler came with us and said he wanted to sit in. Outside the venue I met Pulse fans Craig, Annette and their son Marcus who told me they'd driven 5 hours to come see us. We chatted, took some pics, exchanged details and I promised to put them on our guest list after they told me they didn't realize we were only doing a 40 minute set. 5 hours is a long drive to see 40 minutes of music!! We entered the venue where we gave our tech crew some more time to iron out a few technical hitches.
The venue had organized some hot food for us which we ate upstairs, courtesy of the venue chefs. Great food, thanks for the hospitality! We were joined by Michael Riley and Basil Gabbidon for dinner. After dinner we soundchecked for a while before heading back to the hotel. We rested up for a little while then walked back the short distance to the venue for the show. Looked like a great crowd and we enjoyed our set, though obviously it wasn't as long as our normal show. We got a great response and hung out after with fans, friends, family and fellow musicians including Brindsley Forde who'd performed with Aswad the previous night. Also took some group pics with Adrian Boot, long time music biz photographer. My son Derrick and girlfriend Charlene also made the trip down to the show, as did my sister Sharon and brothers Tony and David.
Afterwards we all headed back to the hotel where we hung out with everyone in the lobby for a while before resting up for the night. Next morning we said our byes to Donovan, C Sharp, Juris, and Dave Jacobs who all headed for the airport for their flights home. Sid had gone back to Brum earlier as he was staying in town for a while. I met up with Brindsley and Desi Roots in the lobby and put them both on the phone with Griz Nisbett who couldn't make it down to the show. We all exchanged new details before I had to head back to Brum with Amlak, Baruch, Ron Thompson, Donna, Millie and Dave. Had a blast at Island 50 and was great linking with so many old friends.
Peace and Love to you all till the next blog!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAVID!
2009-06-14 20:34:15
With an exquisite voice and a commanding stage presence, David 'Dread' Hinds has been the voice, soul, and sprit of Steel Pulse for almost 35 years.
Steel Pulse continues to tour around the world and are working on their latest studio album since African Holocaust.
Hinds is the fulcrum around which the band revolves. He's written 95% of their material since day one and the body of work from Ku Klux Klan through to the latest album is enormous. Born in Birmingham, England of Jamaican parents, Hinds grew up in a hotbed of reggae in Handsworth and shaped by events nationally and in the Caribbean, he and his band have been determined to bring their version of conscious reggae to our ears ever since. Davids son Baruch is the band's drum technician and rapper with the band.
From all of your Steel Pulse Family, have a Happy Birthday Dread!
You are one of a kind and we all love and respect you!
Bless!

Happy Birthday Selwyn B!
2009-06-04 01:37:55
Today (June 4th) is Steel Pulse founding member Selwyn "Bumbo" Brown's Birthday!
Selwyn 'Bumbo' Brown has been responsible for keyboards with Steel Pulse since he joined the band at the very beginning of their existence. Like the others in the band, he had to learn how to play from scratch and he's combined that with songwriting and backing vocals, often rapping live on stage. A Londoner by birth, though schooled in Handsworth, Selwyn has remained an intrinsic part of the band from its early success with Handsworth Revolution through to their latest album release, African Holocaust and beyond.
He now shares keyboard duties with the well-respected Sidney Mills for live performances, with the band continuing to tour schedule, and current studio recordings (yes a new album is in the works!).
With Grizzly Nisbett retiring from touring and recording, it's Selwyn and David Hinds who remain at the creative core of Steel Pulse. His son Derrick was the band's keyboard technician and is a rap artist in his own right.
On behalf of all of the Steel Pulse family and all of those who have had the extreme pleasure of working and knowing you, we all wish you a very "Happy Birthday!"
You are one of a kind and you are loved by all!
Have a blessed day!
We would also like to send Birthday wishes to Janie!
We all hope that both of you enjoy your day with friends and family and know that our birthday wishes and good vibes are sent your way!

Jackie's impact will be felt today!
2009-04-16 00:56:21
When players and fans gather at 15 Major League ballparks today, with every uniform on the field bearing the same No. 42 and ceremonies at new Citi Field leading the annual celebration of one of America's true heroes, the message will be said without a word:
All of our lives have been touched by Jackie Robinson.
On the 62nd anniversary of the day he crossed the color barrier in baseball and led millions of others to break through it not only in the sport but across American society, Robinson's legacy lives on in his credo: "A life is not important, except for the impact it has on other lives."
Of course, some lives have been touched more directly than others.
Tasha Byers is the daughter of a single mother who was a sharecropper and one of 19 children. Upon graduation from the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota this spring, she is headed to the London School of Economics to pursue a graduate degree in Comparative Politics, focusing on development and democracy in Latin America.
Her life has been touched by Jackie Robinson.
Charles Fyffe, a junior at Cal, has helped build a community-based youth organization called Disciplined Respected Entrepreneurs (D.R.E.), an effort to bring together the best and brightest African-American college students specifically interested in becoming business leaders.
His life has been touched by Jackie Robinson.
Derek Jeter is a nine-time All-Star shortstop for the Yankees, and he'll be among the Major League players who on Wednesday will wear No. 42 on their jerseys in honor of the Hall of Fame baseball player who transcends the sport.
His life has been touched by Jackie Robinson.
All three are joined together in the Jackie Robinson Foundation scholarship program, which will be on center stage today in the celebrations across the country. At each venue, Jackie Robinson scholars will be honored in on-field ceremonies, standing alongside baseball heroes as achievers themselves.
Last year, MLB made a major $1.2 million commitment to the Jackie Robinson Foundation over a four-year period to fund scholarships in the name of each of the 30 clubs. The initial investment was $300,000, representing 30 of the $10,000 scholarships. And this year, each club will have its scholar at the ballpark today.
Jeter is the only active player currently funding his own scholarship, and it's clear he does so with his heart and his head.
"I've gotten the opportunity to get to know [Robinson's] family throughout the years, and his wife [Rachel] and daughter [Sharon] are pretty special people. What they've done as a foundation is pretty remarkable," Jeter said. "Whatever we can do to help out, to me, was pretty much a no-brainer."
And in the process helping out, the big brains like Byers and Fyffe get the opportunity to achieve. They're certainly not alone in being students helped along by Jackie Robinson Foundation. This year, the Foundation is providing support to 279 Scholars at 106 colleges and universities in 34 states.
One of them is Akpanoluo Etteh. He's the Yale student from Natick, Mass., whose scholarship is funded by the Turn 2 Foundation, so Jeter gets to keep tabs on his progress toward a Cognitive Science degree.
"You get to see the direct results," said Jeter, who attended the University of Michigan and has said he hopes to someday finish his degree. "If you give somebody a scholarship, you know that they're going to school and they're going to get an education. I know how important financial aid is when you're trying to go to school.
"I check up on them, definitely, follow them and see how they're doing. The [graduation] percent rate they have is extremely high, and that's something that I know they're very proud of. I'm proud of the fact that I get to be associated with them."
Today, every Major Leaguer on the field will have the chance to be associated with these scholars.
This year's main celebration of Robinson putting on a Brooklyn Dodgers uniform in a regular-season game for the first time, thus integrating MLB forever, is being hosted at Citi Field, the new home of the Mets. There will be ceremonies in all the other 14 ballparks across the nation as well.
Festivities in New York will begin at 12:30 p.m. ET with the official dedication of Citi Field's Jackie Robinson Rotunda, which replicates the famous entry to Ebbets Field.
Bob DuPuy, MLB's president and chief operating officer, will represent Commissioner Bud Selig at the Rotunda dedication and the evening ceremony at Citi Field before the Mets play the Padres. He'll be joined by Rachel Robinson, New York Gov. David Paterson, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), and Fred Wilpon, the owner of the Mets, who grew up in Brooklyn as a devoted Dodgers fan and has long admired Robinson.
The idea of "unretiring" Robinson's number belongs to Ken Griffey Jr., back with the Mariners this season. Two years ago with the Reds, Griffey personally petitioned the Commissioner for the opportunity to wear it, and this year Commissioner Selig made the request that all uniformed personnel do the honors.
It's another way to show respect to the man whose legacy is so strong that the foundation that bears his name is helping not by the individual life, but by the generation.
"We decided instead of having a building named or a street named for him, we'd start an active organization that would support the education of minority youngsters," Robinson said at the annual Networking Weekend last month. "That way, they'd be able to fulfill all of their dreams and also become leaders in various communities."
Through that effort and the unique legacy he leaves on baseball, Jackie Robinson touches more and more lives every year.

STEEL PULSE ADDED TO ìISLAND LIFEî WEEK OF CONCERTS
2009-04-08 23:28:47
Birmingham Reggae legends Steel Pulse have been confirmed for the line-up of the previously announced Island Life concert festival at LondonÃs Shepherds Bush Empire, which celebrates 50 years of Island Records. Steel Pulse will play on Wednesday 27th May with The Fratellis and Bombay Bicycle Club.
Formed in Ã75 Steel Pulse signed to Island at the height of the punk wars in late ë77. The first Steel Pulse single for Island, ëKu Klux Klanà (a call for resistance against forces of racism) was released in February 1978. Five months later, their debut album ëHandsworth Revolutionà was released to huge critical acclaim. They went on to support Bob Marley & The Wailers on a European tour in June and July ë78 and were a crucial part of the punky reggae party Bob Marley sang about as they aligned themselves with the punk movement and played several Rock Against Racism shows with artists such as the Stranglers and XTC and memorably at The Clash RAR show in Victoria Park with Xray Spex and the Tom Robinson Band. They released two more groundbreaking albums for Island - ëTribute To The Martyrsà in ë79 and ëReggae Fever (Caught You)à in Ã80.
The ëIsland Lifeà line-up confirmed so far is as follows [NB There are no headliners at these shows; every act appears with equal billing]:

2009 is the 50th anniversary of the founding of Island Records, arguably the most prestigious record label in the history of British music. To mark this milestone the label is collaborating with Island founder Chris Blackwell to arrange the Island 50 festival. Chris Blackwell founded the Island label in Kingston, Jamaica in 1959 with capital of just £1000. Relocating to London in the early 60s Blackwell built the most diverse and enviable back catalogue of any independent record label in history. From IslandÃs early Jamaican roots in ska and rock-steady, through the labelÃs expansion to become the cutting edge of progressive rock in the late 60s, and then on to the signing of such international superstars as Bob Marley and U2, Blackwell brought to Island a unique vision and passion which still informs the labelÃs approach to this day.
Says Blackwell: ìWhen I recorded ëLance Hayward at the Half Moonà in 1959 at Federal Records Studio in Kingston, Jamaica, I had no inkling what path this had set me on. It has been an honour and a privilege to work with some of the greatest musical artists of all time. It was always my intention at Island to make records that stood the test of time, and IÃm proud that Island is still a potent force in music 50 years since that first release. IÃm very excited to be collaborating with the label to celebrate IslandÃs 50th birthday and IÃm particularly excited about the week of shows in London.î
The Island label has been responsible for the careers of some of the biggest stars in music including U2, Bob Marley, Cat Stevens, Traffic, Free, Fairport Convention, Nick Drake, Sandy Denny, Toots & The Maytals, John Martyn, Marianne Faithfull, Aswad, Tom Waits, King Sunny Ade, Third World, Roxy Music, Robert Palmer, the B52s, Sly & Robbie, Melissa Etheridge, The Slits, Steel Pulse, Grace Jones, Tom Tom Club, Pulp, Tricky, Talvin Singh, and latterly Amy Winehouse, PJ Harvey, DJ Shadow, Sugababes, Keane, The Fratellis, Scott Matthews, Paul Weller, The Feeling, Portishead and Florence & The Machine.
To long time Pulse family member Rich Nesin!
Lots of love and best wishes from your Pulse family on this special day!

How Bob Marley's Songs of Freedom Led to Barack Obama's Message of Hope
2009-02-06 12:19:58
Today would be Bob Marley's 64th birthday. I wonder how he would feel today to know that a black man is President of the United States, and that his song, "One Love" was used to celebrate his inauguration.
30 years after a biracial Jamaican reggae artist united a great deal of the world under the banner of peace unity and human right a biracial American united a great deal of the world with a similar messages. Bob Marley chastised corrupt politicians and war while uniting oppressed people. Both Marley and Obama would win the love of the black oppressed class who they represented and liberal white who would further their cause.
Bob Marley was born in 9 Miles, Jamaica in 1946. His father, Captain Norval Marley was an officer in the English Navy as well as a plantation overseer. His mother was an 18 year-old black woman by the name of Cedella Booker. Marley's parents would not stay together and his father would die when Marley was ten.
As a young man, Marley would move to Kingston, Jamaica, where a burgeoning music scene was developing. He would unite with local musicians like Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailer. The trio would form the Wailers and record with some of Jamaica's top producers. Marley recorded several songs that represented the angst of the Jamaican underclass and the tensions between the haves and have-nots in Jamaica.
It wasn't until Bob Marley signed with Chris Blackwell's Island Records, that he would take his sound international. He positioned himself a Rebel singing songs that people all over the world could relate to. Songs like "I Shot The Sheriff", "Get Up Stand Up" and "Concrete Jungle" gave a voice to the largely ignored black underclass in Jamaica as well the rest of the world.
Bob Marley would sing songs of black pride and suffering but also of world unity of people from all races classes and cultures. Marley was able to do what MLK, Ghandi and Obama were able to do to, rally educated people of European backgrounds around their cause. The same populist underdog voice of the people against the establishment transcended from Marley's songs to Obama's speeches.
Barack Obama's Top 5 Bob Marley Songs
Both Obama and Marley had the ability to rally people of African descent under the banner of black pride and people of all other races under the banner of unity. Both became an ambassador for the poor to the mainstream society and government.
While Marley painted a dark picture of oppression, corruption and poverty, there was always an undying optimism in his voice. A sense that things would get better and that people could unite and end racism and classism.
Both Marley and Obama had the ability to be militant without being threatening. Obama's anti war stance and criticism of America's social system especially early in his campaign reflected the angst of the working and middle class in America. Still he was able to sweeten up his strong desire for change with calls of unity hope and progress and an all-inclusive America. Similarly, Marley managed to remain pro-black and pro poor while sweetening up his message with calls for love, peace and unity.
The millions of white Americans who grew up on Marley's music -- from the frat boys to the hippies to the millions of Americans who've heard his songs on the radio and own his Legend CD -- became the a crucial part of Obama's "post-racial" America.
Obama and Marley had the same bipartisan efforts to unite people. After Marley was shot, he united the heads of the warring parties at the historic One Love Peace concert in Jamaica.
Bob Marley was the voice of the third world, was still able to attract the attention of the European upper class, royalty and celebrities.
Time named Exodus Album of the Century and BBC named One Love song of the century. Today, Marley is admired by people of all races colors and creeds across the world.
Bob Marley
I don't have prejudice against myself. My father was a white and my mother was black. Them call me half-caste or whatever. Me don't dip on nobody's side. Me don't dip on the black man's side nor the white man's side. Me dip on God's side, the one who create me and cause me to come from black and white
Barack Obama
I am the son of a black man from Kenya and a white woman from Kansas. I was raised with the help of a white grandfather who survived a Depression to serve in Patton's Army during World War II and a white grandmother who worked on a bomber assembly line at Fort Leavenworth while he was overseas. I've gone to some of the best schools in America and lived in one of the world's poorest nations. I am married to a black American who carries within her the blood of slaves and slaveowners -- an inheritance we pass on to our two precious daughters.
It's a story that hasn't made me the most conventional candidate. But it is a story that has seared into my genetic makeup the idea that this nation is more than the sum of its parts -- that out of many, we are truly one.

Ticket Sales Sink Langerado
2009-02-03 22:59:47
It appears the 2009 Langerado Music Festival has fallen victim to the sluggish economy.
The seventh annual event, which was slated to take place March 6-8 in MiamiÃs Bicentennial Park, has been canceled. Steel Pulse, Death Cab For Cutie, Modest Mouse, Slightly Stoopid, Snoop Dogg and The Pogues were among the bands and artists scheduled to appear at the festival.
Festival co-promoter Ethan Schwartz said slow ticket sales presented organizers with a difficult choice.
ìLangerado has always put the fan experience first,î Schwartz explained. ìUnfortunately, during these difficult economic times, and facing a first year in a new venue, itÃs become apparent that we cannot execute a production that lives up to the high standards of our past events.
ìPutting Langerado on hold was the toughest decision we have ever had to make. We are very grateful for the support of the greater-Miami community and the music community during this difficult time.î
All tickets purchased will be refunded in the next 5-7 business days. Orders will be refunded in full, minus order processing fees. Shipping fees will also be credited for those who did not select free shipping.
In 1954, Martin Luther King accepted the pastorale of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama.

Tour Blog from Selwyn D!

Hi all Pulsers!
Hope you're all well, for those in the United States, I hope that you and your loved ones are having a wonderful Thanksgiving, and as always, thanks again for all your love and support.
We're in Darmstadt, Germany at the moment to perform here later tonight at Central Station. We arrived/drove here from Amsterdam where we performed last night at Melkweg night club. Myself, David, Amlak, Baruch and Ron Thompson all flew to Brussels from Birmingham on Tuesday (Nov 25th) to begin this short Euro tour.
We landed in the afternoon on Tuesday, were picked up by taxi co and taken to our hotel. Didn't have much time at the hotel, as we were performing that night and therefore had to go for soundcheck. We started soundcheck just after 5pm then went back to our hotel afterwards. Not much time to spend here to explore and it was back to the venue to perform our concert. Many thanks to all our fans in Brussels for the great reception you gave us. After our show we met up with some fans backstage for a while then headed back to our hotel for a good night's rest.
Next day, we left our hotel at midday to begin our drive to Amsterdam. After a few hours drive we arrived in Amsterdam, where we parked up for the day, outside Melkweg club. Most of us stayed at the club/bus for day. The tech crew - Dave Jacobs, Ron Thompson, Baruch and Rob Greenland - unpacked and loaded in the equipment. Few hours later we did soundcheck, ran through newer additions as well as tightening up more recent songs. After soundcheck we had dinner at the venue restaurant, courtesy of the promoter. Was nice to see our friends Jacqueline Gezel and son EliJah. Also good to see our friend Chris from the US. Later on we were also joined by friend Leon Robinson who was in town. After dinner at the Melkweg we chilled for a while then hit the stage around 10.30pm. Big ups and thanks to our Amsterdam fans for your great support, plenty of noise and for filling the place out. As always you were with us from the 1st beat of 1st song right through to very last song. Nice energy in tonight's show and forgot to mention this show was the celebration/promotion of the Cannabis Cup!! Also One Love to Patrick and Celia who came to see us for 2nd day in a row.
Additional big ups to our bredren Num, originally from the US, who was also in town and checked us. After our show we hung out backstage with several fans/friends till around 2am when we had to leave for our overnight drive to Darmstadt, Germany where we are now.
Have to go for soundcheck now so will be in touch later tonight.
Blessings, love and Best wishes to you all.

I'll always remember when we performed one night back in the 1980's in Miami. She was unable to attend our show due to a prior engagement but still took the time to call us immediately afterwards and invite us to her house where we reasoned, reminisced, laughed and joked for hours.
At that time Rohan was living with her and becoming a promising college football player. We saw her for the last time 2 years ago when we performed at a festival in Miami.
Rest in Peace Mother Booker and may Jah Bless your spirit always.
One Love , One Heart, let's get together and feel alright.

We all at Steel Pulse would like to pay tribute to our beloved brother and good friend Tom Terrell who passed away peacefully on Thursday 29th November. We first met Tom back in the mid 80's when he road managed for us on several US/Caribbean concert tours and we remained firm friends ever since. Tom went on to become a respected and influential music journalist as well as a reknowned club/radio dj, PR manager and photographer, amongst other things. To all Tom's family and friends we send our sincerest condolences and hope that in the days and years ahead you find strength and comfort in the happy memories and legacies he left us that will continue to inspire us all. Rest in peace Tom and eternal thanks to you for blessing us all with your presence and your boundless, timeless, joyous spirit.
