Steel Pulse would like to send its sincere congratulations to the New Orleans Saints for their victory in the Super Bowl.

Steel Pulse has always rallied ‘round the city that care forgot, so we are glad to see that with the coverage of the Super Bowl also brought coverage of the struggle of New Orleans itself as it continues to recover from Hurricane Katrina.

New Orleans has always been so supportive of the band and crew, so we look forward to our visit again at this year’s Jazz Fest!

Celebrate Bob Marley’s 65th Birthday
2010-02-06 02:33:59

Today, Bob Marley would have turned 65 and music fans around the world are preparing to celebrate the legacy of Jamaica’s greatest musical icon.

“Bob Marley is one of the foremost proponents of the Jamaican culture. He embodies the spirit and soul of the island,” says John Lynch, Director of Tourism, Jamaica Tourist Board. “In every corner of the world you will find Bob Marley fans and every year thousands of music fans visit Jamaica just to find out more about a true musical icon who offered his great gift to the world. Not a day goes by that Marley is not celebrated in Jamaica.”

All around the world, events will be taking place to celebrate Marley’s work. In Jamaica, a week of activities will take place throughout the island to celebrate the life and achievements of the legendary millennium man the Rt. Hon. Robert Nesta 'Bob' Marley, O.M. Activities in Jamaica usually include a service at the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, ceremonial laying of plaques at the Bob Marley Museum in Kingston, an Ital Food Festival and much more.

Visitors to Jamaica can follow the legacy of Marley at anytime by visiting key attractions such as:

Chukka Caribbean Adventure's Zion Bus Line

This authentic Jamaican Country Bus, the “Zion Bus Line”, will take you on a unique tour from Island Village in Ocho Rios, via Claremont to the birth and final resting place of the King of Reggae, Bob Marley. This pilgrimage has been specifically designed for Reggae enthusiasts and hardcore Bob Marley fans, who would like to visit the “Graceland” of Reggae. Rock to the rhythm of Bob’s greatest hits as your “dreadlocked” driver negotiates the narrow winding country roads to the mountain village of Nine Miles. If you are a baby boomer who was hip to the 60’s & 70’s music of Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Jimmy Cliff, or if you are now a fan of Shaggy, Sean Kingston and the Dance Hall phenomenon, this is a Reggae experience you can’t miss.

Bob Marley Museum

The museum portrays the life and achievement of the artist with memorabilia, artifacts, writing and photographs. A twenty-minute drive from Norman Manley International Airport (Kingston), Bob Marley's former place of residence also houses his original studio where he recorded many of his songs. The museum displays Marley's personal treasures and features a well-equipped 80-seat theatre. You can also tickle your palate with sumptuous meals from the Legend Cafe. The venue allows you to see every aspect of the life of Bob Marley.

Happy Birthday Bob, But No 'Jamming' in Jamaica!
2010-02-05 13:27:22

KINGSTON, Jamaica — An annual concert that draws hundreds of tourists to celebrate Bob Marley's birthday has been cancelled for the first time since its inception in 1992 over noise complaints. Police denied promoter Clive Pringle an event permit because of several run-ins with police and residents in Negril, superintendent Dezeita Taylor said Thursday. The Bob Marley Birthday Bash that Pringle organized every Feb. 6 regularly exceeded the 2 a.m. curfew established under the Noise Abatement Act, she said. Last year Pringle was fined $560, police said. Pringle said he appealed, but doubts the concert will be held. The show was launched in 1992 in Negril - a seaside town west of Kingston - and has attracted up to 3,500 people, Pringle said. Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett recently called for a revision of the Noise Abatement Act to extend time for events popular with tourists. Bob Marley birthday bashes are held worldwide in places including London, Hawaii and Miami.

New Blog from Selwyn!
2010-01-28 23:24:45

Greetings to all Steel Pulse family and friends and we hope 2010 has got off to a good start for you all.

We were recently in Kingston Jamaica where we were doing some more recording for our new album and also preparing for our performance at the Rebel Salute concert on Jan 16th. David arrived on the 6th, Sid and Donovan came in on the 8th then Amlak and I arrived on Saturday Jan 9th. Amlak, Sid, and I were actually scheduled to reach here on Jan 6th as well but our flight was cancelled from London due to the heavy UK snow.

When we arrived on Saturday evening in Montego Bay we were picked up by Amlak's cousin Simon and driven in his pickup to our Kingston hotel. Our drive lasted around 3 and half hours and we arrived at the hotel near to midnight. My first priority was to get some sleep!!

Next morning I linked up with Sid, David and Sam Clayton (engineer). Today was a day off for us so I took advantage of the downtime to catch up on emails, calls and do some vocals/keyboard practice.

Next day we began work on the album at famous Tuff Gong studios. We arrived around noon and were welcomed by Alrick, Mondez, Chow, and also present was a horn section that were due to work with us for 3 hours. Soon after we arrived Keysha and Rovleta also arrived to rehearse some backing vocals.

While David worked with the horns I worked on the vocals with the girls. Dean Frasier came into the studio with his band for the next session. He was rehearsing for Tarrus Riley's show on Rebel Salute. We got some nice stuff done with the horns and rounded off the vocal workout before heading back to our hotel and rested up for the night.

Then next morning David and I prerecorded a TV interview with Susan Symes team in the hotel lobby. Afterwards me, Amlak and David were picked up by Sidney and Ice to go down to Tuff Gong. When we arrived we met up with Gentleman and his band that were just completing a session. We had a longer session today, recorded Amlak, C sharp, Sid, and Me.

Later in the evening we finished up on the recording and spent a few hours rehearsing the live set. We finished up around 1am in the morning then headed back to the hotel. For the next few days we pretty much stuck to the same schedule of recording and rehearsing at Tuff Gong then back to the hotel.

On Saturday the 16th we moved to a hotel downtown then began the drive up to St Elisabeth for the Rebel Salute concert. On the way we stopped to pick up Alrick and Rovleta then continued on our way until we were stopped on the highway by police for a random search. After the search we carried on the drive to the concert site. On arrival we met Copeland Forbes who we haven't seen in a while. Was great seeing him and we had a good chat about old times.

We headed backstage after a while where we met Mutabaruka, just outside our tent. Spoke with Muta for a while too then started getting ready for our show. Before our set we checked out Queen Ifrica and Freddie Mcgregor's shows which were both well received.

We went onstage at around 4 am, preparing to do a 45 minute set. All the songs were well received but we had to finish our set after only 25 minutes as the production manager signaled that we had to cut our set.

Our sincere apologies to all our fans that were out there as we had no control over the circumstances and had no chance to explain to the audience.

After coming off stage we hung out for a while with family and friends then headed back to Kingston. On the way back we stopped for some roadside breakfast, yard style. At the stop we were joined by Claudette, Capleton's manager.

Later on down the road I asked Sid to stop by one of my cousin's place in Clarendon before continuing on to Kingston. Got back to the hotel around 11am and got some sleep for a few hours. Dave Jacobs and Juris both flew out on the same day. Next day we ( Me, David, Keysha and Rovleta) all headed back to the studio to continue recording backing vocals for the "Rocksteady" movie track.

Sid had to fly out at 2pm so he headed to the airport at midday. Donovan went to Montego Bay and C sharp and Keysha went home.

The session ended at 4pm and we had to head for the hotel, only having time to pack/grab our luggage and drive to the airport. Many thanks to all our friends and family in Jamaica,

Bless up Alrick, Rovleta, Ice Block, Mondez, Chow, Dave Green.

Much love to everyone for all your support as always and will be back soon with tour blog for the current New Zealand and Australia Ragamuffin Tour.

Peace and Love,

Selwyn

Please help Haiti by donating!
2010-01-20 15:27:23

Wyclef Jean has cancelled his upcoming shows in Australia so he can concentrate on helping survivors of the Haiti earthquake.

The former Fugees star, who was born in Haiti, has been spearheading aid efforts in the Caribbean country following the devastating tremor that rocked the nation last Tuesday.

Jean was due to fly Down Under later this month to perform five shows as part of the Raggamuffin 2010 music festival, but he's now cancelled his trip so he can concentrate on working with his Yele Haiti Foundation.

Festival organisers have confirmed Jean has scrapped his planned appearance - but reveal he has vowed to perform at next year's event.

A statement from Andrew McManus Presents, reads, "Wyclef has postponed his trip until Raggamuffin 2011. Raggamuffin will be helping to support the Haitian people with collections at each show and donations can also be made through Wyclef's own Yele Haiti charity site www.yele.org."

Jean's former Fugees bandmate Lauren Hill is still set to perform at the reggae festival, alongside acts including Shaggy and Sean Kingston. The festival kicks off in Perth on 25 January and will also feature dates in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne

Please go to www.yele.org to donate to the people of Haiti!

Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dr. Martin Luther King jr. Pictures, Images and Photos

Martin Luther King, Jr., (January 15, 1929-April 4, 1968) was born Michael Luther King, Jr., but later had his name changed to Martin. His grandfather began the family's long tenure as pastors of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, serving from 1914 to 1931; his father has served from then until the present, and from 1960 until his death Martin Luther acted as co-pastor. Martin Luther attended segregated public schools in Georgia, graduating from high school at the age of fifteen; he received the B. A. degree in 1948 from Morehouse College, a distinguished Negro institution of Atlanta from which both his father and grandfather had graduated. After three years of theological study at Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania where he was elected president of a predominantly white senior class, he was awarded the B.D. in 1951. With a fellowship won at Crozer, he enrolled in graduate studies at Boston University, completing his residence for the doctorate in 1953 and receiving the degree in 1955. In Boston he met and married Coretta Scott, a young woman of uncommon intellectual and artistic attainments. Two sons and two daughters were born into the family.

In 1954, Martin Luther King became pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. Always a strong worker for civil rights for members of his race, King was, by this time, a member of the executive committee of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the leading organization of its kind in the nation. He was ready, then, early in December, 1955, to accept the leadership of the first great Negro nonviolent demonstration of contemporary times in the United States, the bus boycott described by Gunnar Jahn in his presentation speech in honor of the laureate. The boycott lasted 382 days. On December 21, 1956, after the Supreme Court of the United States had declared unconstitutional the laws requiring segregation on buses, Negroes and whites rode the buses as equals. During these days of boycott, King was arrested, his home was bombed, he was subjected to personal abuse, but at the same time he emerged as a Negro leader of the first rank.

In 1957 he was elected president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, an organization formed to provide new leadership for the now burgeoning civil rights movement. The ideals for this organization he took from Christianity; its operational techniques from Gandhi. In the eleven-year period between 1957 and 1968, King traveled over six million miles and spoke over twenty-five hundred times, appearing wherever there was injustice, protest, and action; and meanwhile he wrote five books as well as numerous articles. In these years, he led a massive protest in Birmingham, Alabama, that caught the attention of the entire world, providing what he called a coalition of conscience. and inspiring his "Letter from a Birmingham Jail", a manifesto of the Negro revolution; he planned the drives in Alabama for the registration of Negroes as voters; he directed the peaceful march on Washington, D.C., of 250,000 people to whom he delivered his address, "l Have a Dream", he conferred with President John F. Kennedy and campaigned for President Lyndon B. Johnson; he was arrested upwards of twenty times and assaulted at least four times; he was awarded five honorary degrees; was named Man of the Year by Time magazine in 1963; and became not only the symbolic leader of American blacks but also a world figure.

At the age of thirty-five, Martin Luther King, Jr., was the youngest man to have received the Nobel Peace Prize. When notified of his selection, he announced that he would turn over the prize money of $54,123 to the furtherance of the civil rights movement.

On the evening of April 4, 1968, while standing on the balcony of his motel room in Memphis, Tennessee, where he was to lead a protest march in sympathy with striking garbage workers of that city, he was assassinated.

A Message from Steel Pulse
2010-01-16 10:43:57

To the people of Haiti

The Steel Pulse family would like to send our condolences to all the families who have lost loved ones in the recent earthquake that have hit the island.

We are endeavouring to help in any way we can, and details will be up on the site soon.

We are presently in Jamaica where we are recording a new album and also preparing to perform on the Rebel Salute concert today.

The island of Haiti has felt the wrath of nature several times in recent years but none as devastating as this latest tragedy.

We were due to perform in Haiti in 2009 but unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances we had to postpone our visit till another time. Rest assured we will be keeping up with your struggle and making every effort to assist in the relief drive.

Our thoughts, prayers and hearts are with you all at this most tragic of times.

Peace, Love and Guidance from the Steel Pulse Family.
