Juneteenth: Freedom Day in the USA

Hail Mi Irieites,

I trust you’ve taken time out to acknowledge Juneteenth which is celebrated on the 19th of June since 1865. It commemorates the day when slavery’s abolition was put into its true effect despite the fact, that the Emancipation Proclamation was declared 30 months before, in 1865.

Here are the details:

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation – which had become official January 1, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the new Executive Order. However, with the surrender of General Lee in April of 1865, and the arrival of General Granger’s regiment, the forces were finally strong enough to influence and overcome the resistance.

So here is a day of true liberation that we will never forget.

Blessings to you all….

  1. I appreciate you acknowledging that day. Which is of high pertinance, to the African (Americans). I don’t understand why there are no comments to this blog!?…Just goes to show how quick people forget their history. It’s taking for granted, and put on the back burner. Especially living in this babylon system. That’s why Rastafari is crucial to me, i WANT to find out who i am, and my roots. Thank you for having the compassion and the knowledge to remind those who need to be involved & PROUD of where they come from. I have the up most respect for you STEEL PULSE. I listen to your NEVER die music on a daily or when i have the time. You & Bob Marley are the reason i made a drastic change in my life. Of course for the better, i have a more zest for life. Because i feel i NOW know who i am. I love you guys, bless up #JahGuide #OneLove
